Wedding Cakes
At many weddings the center piece of the reception is the cake. It often reflects the theme of the wedding and is the focus of a time honored tradition during which the bride and groom share in cutting the first piece and feeding it to one another. Just like in the world of fashion, wedding cakes have their trends and fashions, which are ever changing, some are conservative slight changes while others push the creative limits. Here are a few of the current trends for modern wedding cakes.
The days of starchy tasteless fondant icing are behind us. Today’s cakes not only have to look great but they should taste great too. Many modern brides are opting for a supple butter cream frosting instead of the traditional fondant. The idea that you can’t get as smooth a finish with butter cream is being disproved by many skilled cake decorators.
Staying with the topic of yummy over traditional and flavor of cakes is evolving. Your choices are no longer just vanilla or chocolate, and strawberries in between the layers are so yesterday. Today’s wedding cakes are daring. Ask your baker to let you sample some of their more unique flavors or suggest some of your own. Red velvet will give your cake a stunning and decadent look when it’s cut. Also combining flavors like hazelnut or orange with traditional chocolate will surprise and delight your guests. When considering what to spread between the layers of your cake why not try a chocolate ganache or flavored butter cream?
Cakes are reaching new heights, literally. With celebrity weddings featuring cakes towering to heights of 6 feet or more the current trend is pushing the limits of cake height. If you are having a large formal wedding go all out and have your baker make several layers of delicious cake. For smaller weddings or weddings on a budget, try adding a fake tier decorated to look like the cake or consider placing the cake on a decorative cake tower. The two tier cake is also making a comeback amongst wedding cakes, but in keeping with the for mentioned height trend bakers are frosting 2 and 3 cakes together to give the appearance of 2 tiers while still achieving the desired height. Again this cake can be displayed on a tall, stemmed cake plate to add height and elegance to the look.
One trend that isn’t following the more is more rule are cakes decorations. The days of multi colored flowers covering the tiers and bright colored basket weave patterns are over. A sleek mono chromatic design is what’s in. Try having just one elaborate flower or even a black and white cake design so that it will stand out next to the bright real flowers you have decorating the reception.
Finally, many brides are breaking away from the cake tradition all together and offering their guests a dessert table filled with all kinds of sweets ranging from playful candy displays to a decadent variety of mini desserts and pastries – wedding cakes do not get a look in.
There are no rules for your wedding cake. All you need to do to stick to the current trends is remember to always pick flavor over elaborate fashion, and don’t be afraid to stray from tradition!
