Wedding Cake Decisions Buttercream versus Fondant Frosting and Icing

Wedding Cake Decisions Buttercream versus Fondant Frosting and Icing

Having a beautiful wedding cake is part of the whole wedding scenario. I know people who shop for someone to make their wedding cake for weeks before they make a decision. Tasting and tasting until they finally find that one that they can’t say no to.

I have a particular issue with how a wedding cake tastes, really, if it is the most beautiful wedding cake you have ever seen and doesn’t taste at least as good as it looks, what’s the point? I think one of the things you should think about is how your wedding cake tastes – a great looking creation is for nothing if it tatses like cardboard and has the same texture.

The frosting or icing on the cake should be one of your first considerations. I mean really, have you tasted Fondant? I realize that it is easy to work with and you can create some pretty fantastic figurines and flowers with fondant, (I watch the food network) but does it taste good, no, it does not. Now buttercream also makes a lovely cake but we don’t tend to use it in the UK as much as our American cousins across the Pond. It is not as smooth as fondant, but it makes a pretty wedding cake and just as importantly, it tastes so much better than fondant or icing.

I have seen cakes frosted with buttercream that you decorate with fresh flowers, some of them edible too – in many instances they are “stolen” or perhaps “appropriated” is a better word by guests, especially the younger ones. It makes a really beautiful cake and they can color the buttercream any color that they can as with a fondant or icing coating. If you are one of those brides who want chocolate cake, what looks more beautiful than chocolate cake with creamy delicious buttercream frosting, fresh flowers in your wedding colors and maybe even some fondant ribbons around the cake for beauty, but that you don’t have to eat.

To make the biggest and longest-lasting impression on your wedding reception guests, seriously test all of the alternatives for your wedding cakes and the food you will be serving generally.
