Wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton’s artfully intricate wedding dress is looking to be one of the top attractions in the capital, as flocks of tourists, particularly from overseas get up close and personal with the Royal wardrobe – or at least the Royal wedding dress. At the time it was being made, not even those artisans chosen at Hampton Court to work on the embroidery were aware of who the designer was, nor of the intended wearer. (Sarah Burton is a designer with Alexander McQueen).
Kate’s bridal gown was one of the most closely kept secrets in the country until the moment she stepped out of the Goring Hotel on her way to Westminster Abbey late last April.
The bridal gown is now on display at Buckingham Palace in an exhibition overseen by the Royal Exhibition and which runs from July 23rd to October 3rd. The exhibition curator, Caroline de Guitaut believes the display of “the” wedding dress of the century is highly appropriate for Buckingham Palace because it was where the celebrations took place immediately after the wedding ceremony in Westminster Abbey.
Up close, you can see the fine detail which many onlookers missed on the day and which the television cameras failed to do justice to. The bridal gown features intricate floral detail using lace applique set against the ivory and white satin material. The skirt was designed to resemble a blossoming flower with pleats and satin gazar arches. One surprise for many observers was the train which was short by Royal standards at only 9 feet, though understatement is already one of Princess Kate’s attributes.
Also included in the exhibition are the wedding shows, which could not be seen on the wedding day, along with the diamond earrings and tiara.
